It brings the authenticity of the Indian streets to the gourmet food world of Doha which is so rare to find or even to deliver outside Hindustan (the patriotic Indian in me is in full spirits just now).
Zaffran Café started in full throttle end of 2013 and my initial visits were great with generous hospitality. To make sure this was consistent, I visited at different intervals and I was a fan forever.
Starting with their ambience, it's a nice cozy place and full heightened glass creates that street openness while retaining a certain privacy. The concept of high tables and bar chairs is awesome giving you the pleasure of standing and relishing your food overlooking the shoppers from the Centre Mall and almost like you're in the Indian khau galli (literally food streets). The food displays is sure to turn on your food-o-meter to the top.
Coming to our order for the evening:
Dahi Batata Puri
Dahi Bhalle Delhiwale
Kheema Pau (new menu)
Lots of sweets
2 Zaffran chai - karak
Pani Puri (a certain friend calls them soup bubbles) was so crisp and fresh. Each little bubble full of sweetness and apt chilli water bursts in the mouth full of flavor just the way I like. Dahi Batata Puri was equally good.
Mumbai Burger (wada pau) was as if a local Mumbaiya hawker had delivered it right on my table - that perfect (they bake their own bread hence the personal touch). Dahi Bhalle Delhiwale was good too and my little man loves it each time.
I tried the Kheema Pau today which is part of their new menu (Kheema is minced meat). This was by far their best dish for me after their chicken grilled sandwich that I've had earlier. The dish was juicy and went so well with the butter soaked breads.
On my other visits, I've had Mumbai Grilled sandwich, Paneer Jalebi (signature), Bhel Puri, Pau Bhaji, Khandvi and all of these are must try dishes. Rasgulla chaat is another signature which was okay for my palate but there are several others I know who liked it.
Kheer kadam - my fav. Make sure you pop it in one go and taste that sweet burst of flavours filling your mouth.
Other sweets that I've tried and recommend: pedas, gulab jamuns, rasmalai, just about everything.
You cannot end this meal without a Zaffran Karak chai - I bet you have not had anything better than this earlier.
I give it a 4.5 out of 5.
